A gentle guide for the curious and the hungry
Praying in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit — a way of praying that bypasses the limits of your own understanding and allows the Spirit of God to pray through you. It is the prayer of the Spirit Himself, flowing through a yielded heart.
On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit fell on the gathered believers and they began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. It was the birth of the Church — and the gift of tongues was right at the centre of it.
The apostle Paul taught extensively on the gift of tongues. He distinguished between tongues spoken in a gathered assembly — which require interpretation — and the private prayer language of the believer, which builds up the one who prays.
This is the prayer language that undergirds everything Sentinel does. It is the foundation.
Because intercession demands more than we can articulate.
When you stand in the gap for a nation, for a city, for a person carrying a burden you cannot see — you quickly reach the end of what your mind knows how to pray. You run out of words. You run out of strategies. And that is precisely the point where the prayer of the Spirit begins.
Praying in tongues is how we yield the prayer room to the Holy Spirit. It is how we say: "I do not know what to pray, but You do. Pray through me."
Sentinel was founded on the conviction that the deepest intercession happens when we get out of the way — when we stop composing prayers and start yielding to the One who knows exactly what needs to be spoken. Tongues is the vehicle. The Holy Spirit is the driver. And the prayer room is where it all unfolds.
This is not about being loud or emotional. Some of the most powerful moments in a Sentinel session are the quietest — when the room is thick with presence and the Spirit is interceding through a dozen voices in a language only heaven understands.
You begin by showing up. That is genuinely the first step.
You do not need to have prayed in tongues before. You do not need to understand everything on this page. You do not need to perform or prove anything. You just need to be willing.
In a Sentinel session, you will hear others praying in tongues around you. You will feel the weight of the room shift as the Holy Spirit settles. And if you are open, you may find that something begins to rise in you — syllables, sounds, a language you did not learn — and your only job is to let it come.
We believe that every Christian can speak in tongues. It is a gift for everyone, to help to build your spirit and connection with God. We can help coach you into that gift. Mention it when you introduce yourself on WhatsApp and someone from the team will reach out to help you.
The best next step is to join a live session. Everything starts in the WhatsApp Community.
